работник центра
Anyone have a good suggestion for how to translate работник центра? The phrase occurs in chapter 8:

Товарищ Поцелуев -- известный работник центра, наш горожанин. Теперь из Москвы в отпуск приехал.

He was not a provincial boss... perhaps, "a renowed worker from the Capital, and he comes from our place; now he's on his leave (vacations) here"

of course из центра does not necessarily mean that he was from Moscow or even St.Petersburg; just Chernomorsk was a provincial place so Comrade Plotskiy-Potseluev (I wonder if you should make footnotes for such names as Плотский-Поцелуев (плоть+целовать), МЕдуза-Горгонер, even Балаганов & Паниковский) could work in any bu\ig city - like for examle Kiev.

The question of how to tackle proper names is a difficult one and we've put it off until the first draft is finished. Some (like Panikovski and Meduza-Gorgoner) are funny in transliteration, others (like Balaganov) are probably hopeless.

I think the translation could use a short preface about Soviet language and how it is parodied in the book; that might be a good place to gloss some of the names. If anyone wants to start writing one, I'd be happy to translate it...

Functioneer of some central bureaucratical organization. "известный работник центра" implies relatively high-rank functioneer.

This episode reflects the degree of cenralization of Soviet Union. Bureaucrats from Moscow were considered well above in social status that any functioneer of regional level.

Not that it is so important but they might be exaggerating, deliberately or not. For a one-horse town like the one described in this episode anyone who comes from the capital is regarded as a high-rank functioneer. See "историю о двойной жизни товарища Портищева" from Ilf and Petrov's "1001 день, или новая Шахерезада":

" В родную свою деревню, отстоявшую за шестьдесят километров от столицы,
приезжал уже не мощный профработник, не борец за идею, не товарищ Портищев,
а Елисей Максимович Портищев.

Means he's now working in a capital as opposed to the provinces, i.e. he made a good career. AFAIK it's not so important in the States so I cannot suggest an adequate phrase.

300 is a great movie full of visual effects and graphics which made it different and much better.
Acting was great, director did a wonderful job and chose great actors, full of action, and it is based on a true story.
