художник-пушкарь
What is the meaning of пушкарь in this excerpt from chapter 8?

Товарища Плотского мы не видели, но если указанный
товарищ вас действительно интересует, то поспешите. Его ищет
какой-то трудящийся, по виду художник-пушкарь.

Is it someone who fires cannons, or someone who makes them?

Or someone who draws them, художник-баталист?

I have a feeling that this question requires knowing, not guesses. If this is not an allusion to some painters' community occasionally based on Pushkarskaya street in some city (all three suspected have one, Moscow, Petrograd and Kiev), then I'd suppose a batalist painter, but with a great deal of suspicion.

We should not forget that some words are used by Ilf and Petrov without any specific secret meaning, just to make things sound more funny, and should be translated as such.

1) Пушкарь is an artillerist in old Russia, not a gun-maker.
2) I am sure Astafyev borrowed the word from Ilf and Petrov.
3) I think this is a double-allusion: my grandfather once told me (when I asked exactly about this extract) that photographers working in the streets and on the beaches were sometimes nicknamed "пушкари" because they used to carry around a big box camera with a tripode; when they took aim from under that blach cloth, they used to shoot by solemn taking off the cap from the lens, and, when there it was not enough ligt - they at the same time put light to a magnesium flash. Such a flash goes off with a loud "bang" and a fountain of flame, sometimes with sparks etc., which looks like an explosion of a small bomb, hence the nicknaim. Now, those painters carrying their tripodes looken not unlike such street pfotographers

What about the possibility of pulling out of Iraq, letting Iran invade and lose resources fighting their own kind,
and then come in and mop up the dregs?
