In chapter 8, Bender addresses Panikovski with this phrase

Молчать, золотая рота! -- закричал Остап

I understand it means something vaguely like "ruffians" and assume there's a pun here on золотой рот, but I could use some ideas for how to translate it.

	золотая рота or золотари is the ironical name of people who clean the canalization to be quite honest - not for canalization (whene there's no such thing), but for removing shit out from town. they driving carts with barrels full of shit. that why they are золотари - coz it sounds like absurd don't know the english name for this (Reply to this)

	I think you're right about 'ruffians', as "золотая рота" was tsar's top guardian squadron of grenadiers. I can't find any connotations of "рот" nor "золотари" though. (Reply to this)(Thread)

	Er... google? Because there's both meanings - "золотая рота" as top squadron and as group of vagabond (from Gorky's novel - ?). I guess the second's sarcastic meaning - worst of the worst as opposit to best of the best. Because I don't think all vagabonds called "золотая рота" were nightmen. (Reply to this)(Parent)

	This comes soon after we're reminded of Panikovski's golden tooth in Chapter 7. I thought the typographic similarity to рот might be intentional. But maybe that doesn't come through to a Russian reader. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

	Рота has absolutely nothing to do with рот and does not bring it to mind. Actually the word рот does not even have such a form - the genitive will be рта. (Reply to this)(Parent)

Любопытно, что русское выражение «золотая рота», что в переносном смысле тоже означает "разношерстный сброд", пошло от прозвания роты дворцовых гренадеров, для которой Николай I лично разработал яркие и эффектные мундиры, в которых преобладали красные и золотые цвета.

All said above seems to be correct. It is a typical inversion: what initially meant "the best of the best", the tzar's guard 'Golden unit', was used ironicaly to name "the worst of the worst", the underskilled stuff used for the most dirty work, especially sewage.

This latter meaning "sewage workers" have soon become the primary (and the only) one for the "golden unit".

Some later it absorbed the more general meaning "underskilled team", that hence appears to be double-ironical (and obviously softly-offensive). This is what Bender means in the discussed case.

This is a characteristic style of Bender who almost newer uses words in their direct meaning.
