деревенский актив
In Chapter 7, the Antelope crew are 'окруженные заботами деревенского актива'. What is the precise meaning of актив in this context? Is it the socially active population of the village, the leadership, everyone of working age? Clearly I should have spent more of my formative years under advanced socialism, the vocabulary is slipping on me...

Actively collaborating with Soviets. Usually members of Communist Party and Komsomol or who plan to join these organizations.

Yeah, agreed with above, where "socially active" means showing (at least outward) willingness to take an active part in Party-encouraged proceesings, like campaigns for or against whatever was told to be for or against.

Not exactly. "Leadership" are party-appointed comissars, working for Soviet system full-time, and Active are village inhabitants who actively collaborate.

In the late 10th or early 20th, Communist Party members were few, and mostly were high rank leaders.
But, to late 20th, many common people became Party members, in order to make a carrier.
These Party newcomers actively collaborated with Soviet authorities, only for carrier reason, and were called "Актив", shorten from "Партактив" (партийный актив).
Try "communist activists" for it.
